As a translator, I
have been dealing with the nuances of language for three decades. In
times when the use of AI is on the increase, it is important to me
to continue translating creatively and independently of programs
based on statistics instead of just correcting all the errors in
machine-translated texts.
Language is varied and often ambiguous; depending on the context, a
different term may be more suitable in the translation. Here is an
example from the field of law: "Verordnungen" in German can be
translated into English as "ordinances" or "decrees" when national
law is concerned. However, if the context relates to EU law, the
translation is clearly "regulations".
Moreover, there are often linguistic differences between different
countries. Examples of such differences are the British term "flat"
for the German word "Wohnung" and "apartment" in the USA, or
"register office" for the German "Standesamt" in Great Britain and
the term "office of vital statistics" used in the United States.
Almost every translation gives rise to queries about the source
text. These concern, for example, questions about the specific
context of words or what they relate to in a sentence or about
unclear or ambiguous terms and wording. It is important to clarify
these questions in order to achieve a translation of high quality.
Therefore, personal cooperation with clients is an essential part of
my work, especially when it comes to larger-scale assignments. My
long-standing clients know and appreciate this method of working.
"Ms Möller is an excellent translator. She always works very
conscientiously, even under the time pressure that is common in our
profession. She even manages to translate highly complex contracts
effortlessly. Both Ms Möller's general language skills and her
specific know-how in the legal field are very impressive. She knows
how to analyze and express even the most delicate nuances in legal
texts in her translations with absolute accuracy."
